It is the translation of healthcare diagnosis, procedures, medical services, and equipment into universal medical alphanumeric codes.
The diagnoses and procedure codes are abstracted from medical records, such as physician's notes, laboratory and radiologic results, etc. Medical coding professionals help ensure the codes are applied correctly during the coding and billing process, then creating a claim to be paid by insurance carriers.
A CPC (Certified Professional Coder) is an individual who has professional integrity, and has passed a coding certification exam sponsored by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC). The exam consists of 150-questions regarding the correct application of CPT, HCPCS and ICD-10-CM codes used for billing professional medical services to insurance companies.
A CPC must have at least two years coding experience and maintain yearly CEU requirements.
A student who successfully passes the AAPC’s certification exam will be awarded the CPC-A certification if he/she does not have at least two years full time coding experience.
This exam is a test of medical coding proficiency consisting of 150 multiple-choice questions that assess 17 areas of knowledge. These questions are to test your knowledge of the proper application of CPT® procedure codes, HCPCS Level II supply codes, and ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes—all of which medical providers use to submit claims to payers. During the test, you will use approved coding books—the AMA’s CPT® Professional Edition, an ICD-10-CM and HCPCS Level II code books. You will have five hours and forty minutes to complete the exam. You must answer 70% of the questions correctly to pass and receive a certification.
Classes are customizable depending on whether you have no background knowledge in healthcare or you have been in healthcare and want to change your career path. We offer a 16 week course for those brand new to healthcare, Next we offer a 12 week class for those with some background knowledge of anatomy and medical terminology. Finally, we have a boot camp for those who are ready to take the test but want to have a refresher before the test.
